Understanding Clenching and Grinding at Geelong West Bright Smiles Dental
Teeth clenching and grinding — medically known as bruxism — is a common dental condition that affects many people, often without their awareness. It involves the involuntary or habitual grinding or clenching of teeth, typically during sleep but sometimes during waking hours too. Bruxism can lead to a range of dental problems and lasting discomfort, so it is essential to address it promptly with professional dental care.
Symptoms of Bruxism
Identifying bruxism early can prevent serious dental complications. Common symptoms include:
Teeth Grinding:
Often noticed by partners or family members because of the noise it makes during sleep.
Especially on waking, from the strain on the facial muscles.
Tooth Sensitivity:
Teeth become sensitive to temperature changes or pressure.
Damage to Teeth:
Fractured, flattened or chipped teeth from prolonged grinding.
Causes of Bruxism
Understanding the causes helps us manage and treat bruxism effectively. The reasons behind it include:
Stress and Anxiety:
Bruxism often occurs in response to stress, anxiety or tension.
Malocclusion:
Misalignment of the teeth or jaw can lead to grinding as the body tries to adjust.
Lifestyle Factors:
Alcohol consumption, smoking or caffeine intake can make bruxism worse.
Medications:
Certain medications can induce grinding or clenching as a side effect.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is bruxism, and how do I know if I have it?
Bruxism is the clenching of the jaw and grinding of the teeth, often involuntarily. You may have it if you experience frequent jaw pain or stiffness, headaches on waking or worn-down teeth, or if your partner hears grinding during your sleep. A dental examination can confirm bruxism and assess its severity.
2. How does wearing a night guard help with bruxism?
A night guard is a personalised oral appliance worn during sleep to protect the teeth from grinding and clenching. It keeps a barrier between your upper and lower teeth so they never come into direct contact, reducing the damaging effects of bruxism. Night guards are comfortable to wear and can significantly relieve tooth wear, jaw pain and headaches.
3. Can stress or anxiety cause bruxism?
Yes — stress and anxiety are common triggers. Many people clench or grind their teeth as a subconscious response to emotional tension. Managing stress can reduce the symptoms, and our team provides guidance on stress management strategies alongside your treatment.
4. What are the potential consequences of untreated bruxism?
Untreated bruxism can wear down tooth enamel, causing sensitivity and a higher risk of cavities. Prolonged clenching can strain the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), causing pain and dysfunction, and the associated tension often leads to frequent headaches. The noise of grinding can also disturb sleep, causing fatigue. Early diagnosis and treatment prevent these complications.
5. Is there a payment plan available for clenching and grinding treatment?
Yes. We work with DentiCare to offer effective payment plans for our patients — they hold all the information on payment options for any treatment you need with us. Visit denticarepaymentplans.com.au, or ask at reception.
6. How long will I need to wear a night guard?
That depends on the severity of your bruxism and how you respond to treatment. In many cases a night guard is a long-term solution for protecting your teeth. Regular check-ups let us review your progress and make any adjustments needed to keep the guard effective and comfortable.
